Expert Seminar: ‘DTCC and Financial Supervision’

The Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE) and the Markets and Corporations platform of Institutions for Open Societies would like to invite you to a guest lecture by Michalis Sotiropoulos, the Executive Director of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) clearing house.

Michalis Sotiropoulos will discuss the work of DTCC as a major player on the financial markets worldwide. He will talk about DTCC’s relation with policy-making institutions and supervisory authorities such as the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and the European Central Bank (ECB) and the legislative institutions of the European Union. Is the supervision of financial markets in Europe now effective? Are new changes, such as supervision of central counter-parties (CCPs), necessary and why? By this insight into the day-to-day relationship between major players on the financial markets with supervisory authorities, this seminar will provide for a practical reflection on issues of fundamental rights, accountability and the effectiveness during rule-making and supervisory processes.

The programme will be as follows:

  • Miroslava Scholten (Associate Professor European Law, Utrecht University) opens the meeting
  • Michalis Sotiropoulos (Executive Director, DTCC) provides the key-note speech on DTCC and financial supervision
  • A discussion takes place with (among others) Aneta Spendzharova (Assistant Professor Political Science, Maastricht University), Iro Karagianni and Laurens van Kreij (PhD candidates in European Law, Utrecht University).

The Expert Seminar will take place on Friday 1 June 2018, from 11:00 until approximately 13:00, at the ‘Kabinet van de Koning’ in the City Centre Library of Utrecht University (Drift 27, 3512BR, Utrecht). Participation is free of charge, but please register by sending an e-mail to vanKreij@uu.nl.
