VIDI for Michiel Luchtman

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has decided to award 87 vidi’s this year. Vidi, together with Veni and Vici, is part of the NWO’s Talent Scheme. 15 vidi’s have been granted to Utrecht University, 3 of which have been awarded to the REBO faculty.

One of the Vidi’s has been granted to the Law Faculty: Michiel Luchtman will receive a vidi for his proposal ‘The rise of EU law enforcement authorities – Protecting fundamental rights and liberties in a transnational law enforcement area’.

More and more often, EU institutions are charged with the detection and prosecution of violations of rules. These institutions have far-reaching investigative powers and sanctions at their disposal. This project explores whether the legal framework offers sufficient guarantees against illegitimate violations of citizen’s fundamental rights and is focused on formulating recommendations to solve potential stumbling blocks. Luchtman will be carrying out the research over the next couple years, together with two PhD students. For this purpose, he will receive about 800.000 euros from the NWO.

Michiel Luchtman is associate professor at RENFORCE and the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology. He has previously received a veni. In 2009 he furthermore received the Siracuse Price of the International Association of Penal Law/AIDP for his book ‘European cooperation between financial supervisory authorities, tax authorities and judicial authorities’.
